It’s Time to Learn by Doing – Not by Reading, Watching, or Listening

file000564261807When I was a little kid I was terrified of learning to ride a bike without training wheels. I was also extremely jealous. I was 6 at this point and my best friend (who also went by the name of Mandy) would ride bikes with me. She could go so fast without training wheels. My little brother was three years old and even he had his training wheels off! What was I missing? Why could they do it and I couldn’t?

I remember sitting back and watching them so I could see how they did it. I’d ask them questions like how you make sure the bike doesn’t tip over and how bad it hurt went they fell. I thought that if I kept watching them it would be easier when I finally got up the courage to try.

Well, I’m sure you know what happened. I hopped on my friend’s bike, pedaled about an inch and a half, and fell over. I scraped up my hands and my elbow. I was so embarrassed I ran inside and didn’t ride bikes with her the rest of the day.

The thing is… you can’t learn to ride a bike just by watching. You can get an idea of how it works, sure, but that’s not going to change that wobbly feeling as you sit down without the support of those extra wheels. The only way you’ll truly learn is to pedal, fall, get back up again, pedal harder, fall, and repeat until you get it right.

Working online is the same way. There are products everywhere that people are telling you to buy. There are coaches asking for your money. Everywhere you look there is some guide, tutorial, or bit of information for you. The thing is, just reading all of this isn’t going to get you any closer to your goal.

do it - procrastination concept

I buy quite a few online marketing products myself. It helps to be able to read through the steps and learn how things work, but you’re only getting a partial understanding by reading. Just like I understood that to ride a bike I had to pedal fast enough to keep the bike from falling. That didn’t keep me from falling over when I tried though because concepts can only take you so far.

I got an email earlier from someone talking about how they want to start making money online and they’ve bought and read these three products. They wanted to know which one to buy next before they actually got started. I told them what I’m telling you…

It’s time to learn by doing!

The best way to start making money online is to dive in and start doing. If you get stuck, do some Google searches and find the information you need to keep pushing through. Go ahead and buy a product if you want a better idea of how something works but realize you won’t fully understand until you put it into practice.

Once you’ve started doing and you’ve got a good grasp of you method, THIS is when I suggest reading, watching, and listening. Find people who are doing what you’re doing, but doing it better. Try to figure out what’s making them do better. Learn from them. Figure out what you can do to take things to the next level. Once again, it’s all about doing.

If you want to hear an awesome story about learning by doing, check out this Craig Desorcy video. It’s so inspirational.

  1. Great post, Mandy(?) LOL

I’ve had the same thing on my mind lately. Craig’s video is one I may need to watch weekly to stay focused. 😉

  2. Well, I didn’t learn to ride a bike until I was about 12 or 13. Far too scared of falling. In fact it was my little sister who taught me. lol.

I completely agree that you have to come to a point where you have to take action. I was jealous that I couldn’t ride a bike so I finally took action, and learned.

And with the online stuff, I am taking action, even when I know that things will not work out perfectly. If you keep watching by the sidelines, you will never know.

Great post Amanda and thanks for the bicycle memories. 🙂

  3. If all we ever do is WISH we could do something and never actually DO it, we can’t move forward. There has to be a point in time when you stop whining and start working towards the end goal.

I agree with you… Learn by doing!
