Take a Notebook With You or End Up Writing on Shoe Boxes Like Me

Yesterday I took my laptop to town to work. The plan was to work through breakfast, do some shopping, and work in the car on the way home. Of course, because that’s just my luck, my laptop died during breakfast so I packed up and decided I would start my day off early. (I planned to take Thursday mostly off to spend time with Taylor.)

I got a bit of work done during breakfast. I had what felt like a million comments to approve and reply. That was pretty awesome. Comments are always fun! After that I was working on my week 1 list freebie.

Well, the laptop died and I figured the rest of the day would just be relaxing. I went to Walmart to pick up some groceries, look over the clothes that were on sale since they were moving in spring clothing, and noticed a shoe sale. They were putting almost all of the sneakers on sale and I really needed a new pair.

I got out to the car ready to head home and guess what happened? Inspiration struck! All of a sudden I had a dozen great ideas for blog posts and even an idea for a report. I looked everyone and found a pencil but no paper. I was freaking out. lol I didn’t want to lose all of the neat ideas. Then I looked in the back seat.

shoebox

So… we meet again shoebox.

Well, I’ll just cut to the end of my story. I’m now at home with my calendar planning out blog posts based on the notes I wrote on a lid of a shoebox. Next I’ll have to type out all of the notes I made outlining a free report I’m going to write for you guy about Tumblr because this box won’t fit very nicely into my fileΒ cabinet.

I normally keep a small notebook with me and the one time I didn’t I ended up scribbling all over a box. Don’t let this happen to you! You never know when inspiration will strike.

The good news is that I came up with a lot of really cool ideas that you’re going to enjoy.

What do you do when inspiration strikes while you’re way from the computer? Leave a comment!

  1. Ha! That totally sounds like me! I have to check all my receipts and odd pieces of paper for my notes and ‘inspirations’ when I clean out my bag…I really should follow your advice and carry a notepad, or upgrade to a really big smart phone….
Great post, but where’s the shoes?

  2. Great post and isn’t it interesting how ideas hit at the most peculiar times. I am thinking of getting some sort of portable pocket to carry my tiny pen and notebook in. A lot of my pants have pockets and they work great but I need to have a pocket all the time.

    • Ya, it’s a great idea. Even little ideas can blossom into big plans so I try to write down anything I think of that could help my business to look over later.

  3. This is literally thinking outside the box! Or was it inside? Sorry, I couldn’t resist. πŸ™‚ Good advice, Amanda! πŸ™‚

  4. Not only for inspiration, at my age I keep my notebook with me to remember things. πŸ™‚

  5. That’s hilarious! You gotta use what you have available right? Sadly, this has happened more times to me than I can count. Well for me it is not a shoebox, but the back of some random receipt I found in my purse. I never seem to remember to pick up a small notebook to keep in my purse when inspiration strikes.

  6. Lol! I tend to write all over the envelopes that my mail comes in and if I’m in work I jot stuff on those little yellow ‘stick it’ notes. I find them all over the inside of my handbag and in my jacket pockets. I really should get a little notebook.

  7. Hi Amanda, funny post – a shoe box is a lot better than something smaller like a receipt that can get easily lost! What I do is use a small Sony digital voice recorder (insert Amazon link here πŸ™‚ and dictate my ideas into it, using Dragon Naturally Speaking formatting commands (such as comma, period, etc) so when I’m back at the computer the ideas can be converted into text quite easily – this method gets my highest recommendation for you, 2nd place would be notebook on clipboard, and 3rd place – shoebox πŸ™‚

    • That’s not a bad idea. Did you have to train you Dragon to pick up the digital voice recorder or did it work after doing normal training?

      • That’s a good question – it works fine if there isn’t much background noise (no extra training) but I was just using the transcription function on a recording I’d done while driving and it looks like “him” is their word for engine noise – here’s a bit of the transcription: “the us know him him him him him him I once again this using games of to him him him ” lol. But still you have the recording itself that can be listened to and transcribed from directly (listening and typing) and plus it can be multi-purposed as a podcast – can’t do that with stuff that I just scribble down, ya know….

        • Good point. I normally have my laptop with me and I record audio or videos with it while I’m out to play back later. I also sometimes pay a VA to transcribe for me.

  8. That’s too funny. I always make sure I have my notebook with me. If I don’t have room in my bag, I will take a sheet of paper and fold it up real small, just in case inspiration hits.

Look forward to reading your shoebox blogs. πŸ™‚

  9. Yes, a notebook or at least some scrap paper is a necessity. A while ago I was trying to do all my note-taking on a phone, but it’s just a little too slow when an idea strikes. I’ve recently switched back to pen and paper for some things, and I’m liking it. πŸ™‚

    • Ya, using a phone is nice because it’s digitally stored but the buttons are small and it’s hard to get the information down before you start to lose sight of your idea.

  10. Love it!!

I’ve started to implement this recently as I’ve been using the Dragon app on my phone to dictate ideas I get while lying in bed (lights already out), and then I email it to myself…So cool! Capture the thought, cause it’s probably a Golden Nugget!

Cool site, and love the bottom newsletter subscription bar! I signed up. πŸ™‚

    Have a great weekend.

  11. I have notepads an blocks of postit notes with pens in every corner of the house where I sit.

Because I find that if I don’t write it down the instant I get the idea, it goes as quickly as it came…. sad to say, but true.

  12. Lol, reminds me of the saying,’ When all you have is a hammer, then everything else looks like a nail’.
Sometimes I use scraps of papers in my bag, mostly receipts or unused napkins.

  13. I find inspiration can strike when driving which makes note taking problematic – but that digital recorder could be an option!

  14. You’ve reminded me that I used to carry a small notebook everywhere, and I haven’t done since I got my iPhone. Sometimes I even remember that there’s a voice recorder on it! lol Then of course I have to remember to listen to the note I recorded.

I should just carry a notebook again …

  15. Hey Amanda

I started taking a small notebook with me when I went hikig….for some reason ideas pop into my mind when I hike awhile…maybe it is the surrounding of nature and destressing from excercise.

    • I’ve been thinking about getting a voice recorder for when I’m out on a walk. Or maybe I just need to finally get a smartphone and use that to record. Hmm.

  16. LMAO Amanda… I’m laughing so freaking hard over here. This is just what I needed to make my day complete!

It’s been a rough start, but apparently all I needed was a little boost and your freaking out over blog posts in the parking lot did it for me. πŸ™‚

    Thank you!

I often go to bed with a notepad on my nightstand. I always tell the partner, you never know when the subconscious kicks into gear. That notepad has been a lifesaver for me more than once! πŸ™‚

  17. That’s a cute story. I’m glad everything worked out for you. I usually at least have a small notebook in my purse, but every once in a while I have to quickly dig up whatever I can find to write myself a reminder note. At least you are being product and getting some great ideas. How cool!

  18. I have this notebook I usually carry everywhere plus I have little post-it notes in my purse. But lately my brain has been all over the place (blame it on pregnancy) and when inspiration struck, I was out of luck (forgive the rhyme, lol). Luckily my phone was on hand and it has a word processor, I don’t know what I’d have done otherwise. Lucky you had a shoe-box, ha πŸ™‚

  19. Love it! Hey, Harry Potter was written on napkins in a coffee shop, so don’t kick the shoe box method. It may make you famous one day. πŸ˜‰

I have an Andriod X2. I got it with the intentions that I’d be this fabulous marketer and always on the go and I wanted to stay connected like those other fabulous marketers who are always on the go. That didn’t happen, but, I do love it for writing quick notes–even when I’m lounged on the couch and don’t want to get up and go back to the computer. The Evernote app is nice–syncs everything all up for you.

I’ve also noticed that Willie Crawford records videos from his iPhone while he’s out walking.

Without a smart phone, maybe you can create text messages as notes and just not send them? Use a fake number, or txt someone who won’t mind getting your ideas. Your phone would at least store them for you. My daughter texted me tons of cake baking tips–over 30 of them–for a cake book I’m putting together. I just copied and pasted those into Evernote.

In the car we keep one of those little flip note books. They used to cost 4 for a $1. I think they are 2 for a $1 now, but they fit in your shirt pocket (or back pocket of jeans) or the console of a car really easy…or a purse, but I assume you’re like me and don’t drag one of those things around. LOL

Kindle Fire is also great for taking notes with a little note app, plus you don’t have to pay a monthly service fee like with a smart phone. I love mine. I admit I mostly play Solitaire on it, but I have tons of Kindle books on it too.

    • I actually don’t have a cell phone at all! lol I honestly don’t leave home often enough for it to be worth the cost but I may get one in the next month or so. During the spring and summer I like to go to the beach since it’s just down the road.

  20. lol this is funny. I’m glad I’m not the only one who does stuff like this. Thanks, Amanda.

  21. Lucky the shoe box was light enough the write on!

I always have a notebook in the car and in the bags I usually carry (handbag, backpack, casual bag). When that fails I use my trusty iPhone to make notes or take pics and send them to Evernote.

The biggest issue is getting back to them, collating and implementing the ideas!
