What Can Spiderman Teach Us About Online Marketing?

He knows a lot about the “web”. (Too much? Probably, but I laughed.)

Oh, come on. Spiderman is just a super hero from a comic book. What can he teach us about internet marketing? Look! He doesn’t even have a computer on that desk!

Actually, we can learn a bit about approaching online business from our spidery friend. We just need to look beneath the surface for a minute.

Oh, and no matter how much I’d like to take credit for the punny caption, I can’t. My wonderful fiance made the joke when I was telling him about what I was writing.

What Spiderman Teaches Us About Branding

When Spiderman got his powers he created a costume as part of his new persona. It was bold and recognizable. That costume and persona is his brand. This is what he wears while performing his super hero duties.

Like Spidey, you need to have your own brand to have a successful blog. I’m not saying you need to dress up in a skin tight, brightly colored outfit, no. But take time to develop your brand. What do you stand for? What’s important to you AND your readers?

One important thing to remember when building your brand is that it’s an extension if you and your passions. You want to be YOU but with a focus on your niche. I may talk about my cats from time to time here, but the main focus is on marketing and running an online business.

Your brand also needs to permeate your online properties associated with your blog. You want to proudly display your logo or headshot on your blog, Facebook, and Twitter. Readers People need to be able to see your picture or logo and make recognize it.

He Knows His “Why”

While I hope your why isn’t as tragic as his, you still need to know what it is! Why are you doing what you’re doing? Is it for fun? Is it so you can stay home with your family and still make money? Do you wan to retire early? Know your why and refer to it when you feel yourself getting off track. Let your why drive you to success!

Don’t Be Afraid to Reinvent Yourself

Sometimes things go stale. Sometimes you get off track. That’s normal. When this happened with Sqiderman, look what happened?

Spiderman versus The Amazing Spiderman.

The Amazing Spiderman is a reboot of the series with some distinct differences. Don’t be afraid to do the same!

I’ve done this quite a few times now. This time last year I was all about Kindle publishing. It was fun and I still make money from the books I released, but I stopped enjoying it. I was writing books for the sake of writing books and it just wasn’t as fun. So what did I do? I changed my focus. I did a reboot and refocused on my PLR shop and blogging. I’m having a blast!

Last, but probably the most important thing we can learn is actually a nice tip by Uncle Ben.

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

This one is all about how you treat your customers. When someone lands on your blog or signs up for your email list you have the power to present them with anything. Use it wisely! Do you think people would like Spiderman as much if he used his power to run around fill people’s mailboxes with silly string web?

Your readers TRUST you. Don’t betray that trust by filling your blog with garbage and blasting your list with advertisements for spammy products just to earn a quick buck. Spiderman didn’t get where he is now by taking the easy way out. If you remember correctly, the easy way out is what caused the tragedy that sparked his crime fighting career. It takes hard work and dedication to your readers to be successful online.

  1. I loved the connection you presented to us with spider-man and internet marketing. It was really Guinness to be honest. I sometimes feel myself needing to go back to “why” I am doing this in the first place. This is because I get a little “stale” at times and I think a reboot is something I should consider. Being that time hasnt been on my side for a while now, I miss what I use to get accomplished. This blog post taught me a few things, one to brand yourself the way you want it to be. And two, use your power wisely. But the third thing I got out of this is that you should “never give up”. To always try my hardest when I put my name on something and to always keep going with it.

  3. What a great way to present online marketing strategies. I love the idea that there is nothing wrong with changing your mind or refocusing your energies. We do this in everyday life when we try a new hairstyle, a new job or even a new supermarket chain. It is OK to try something new.

Thanks for the pics of Spiderman too. I have still to see the new version though 🙂

  4. Spidey taught us two things. Those being:

“anything in life worth having, is worth fighting for” as well as “nothing in life is easy, especially the things we want most.”

To reach ultimate success, you must be willing to work to attract what you desire most. Luxuries worth having are never served on a silver platter. FOCUS on yoru goals. Only through dedication and consistency will you receive the payoff from your business endeavors.
